The mission of the Clevelanders in Motion's
initiative is to formulate responses to the many complex challenges
to participation in consistent, daily physical activity. It builds
on the innovative, local planning and urban design work underway-layering
in a variety of school-, park- and work-based active lifestyle programs-to
effect sweeping changes. Truly visionary work is underway in Cleveland
that, when completed, will redefine how Clevelanders live and work.
Coupling the city's "industrial strength" infrastructure-the
sturdy bones for today's active lifestyle transformation-with growing
public awareness of the epidemic levels of obesity, heart disease
and diabetes not only among the general population but also increasing
affecting children, the Clevelanders in Motion initiative has assembled
world-class resources to bear on the question of how to increase
and sustain active living for all age groups in the community.
The Clevelanders in Motion mission is to coordinate
an inter-disciplinary approach to promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors.
The goals for Clevelanders in Motion are:
1. identify barriers to
physical activity and formulate strategies to overcome them
2. identify community resources and broaden network of organizations
promoting healthy lifestyles
3. launch a series of active lifestyle initiatives built around
Cleveland's increasing parks, trails and other active living resources.
4. develop a marketing campaign aimed at increasing awareness of
benefits of active lifestyles
5. monitor initiative's effectiveness using Case Western Reserve
University Medical School and the Cleveland State University Urban
Child Research Center.
