In 12 months ParkWorks has successfully raised $3 million for
downtown parks, completed one park, broke ground on another, and
completed the design process for a third.
Throughout
2002, the Plain Dealer's "Quiet Crisis" series chronicled
the forces contributing to Cleveland's sluggish economy and its
U.S. Census-confirmed brain drain. The need for more vibrant public
spaces that could both help spur and support such New Economy development
has emerged as an important need for the community and fitting charge
for ParkWorks.
At the request of the Cleveland Foundation, ParkWorks
launched a comprehensive initiative to involve Clevelanders in the
redesign of their downtown parks and raised over $3 million for
the projects since 2002.
Through a comprehensive series of surveys, meetings
and design charrettes, that have already resulted in construction,
ParkWorks has successfully begun to reshape the face of downtown.
With the assistance of several hundred enthusiastic Clevelanders,
Strawbridge Plaza was dedicated on
October 8, 2003 in memory of community activist, Herb Strawbridge.
The Medical Mutal Plaza at Huron Point
breaks ground on December 5, 2003 and the design process for Perk
Park is nearing completion.
