Project Design
With the initial seed money in-hand, OCNW sought-out ParkWorks and Cleveland
Public Art to collaborate in making Market Square Park a model urban park
for the city of Cleveland. The project team engaged the Greater Cleveland
RTA to implement the new "Transit Waiting Environments" (TWE)
program which makes capital investments in high-use, high visibility transit
stops throughout their transit network. This will be the first TWE project
in the City of Cleveland, and is being looked at to set both design and
process standards for the RTA's new program. The initiative focuses on
augmenting the current waiting experience with a layer of customer experience
that could include improved facilities and amenities, concessions or other
convenience retail, landscaping and the inclusion of public art. The new
TWE at Market Square Park would be significant components of the Market
Square Park renovation. Overall, the project design will seek to integrate
the site with the adjacent transit facilities. A focus will be put on
transit oriented design and sustainable building principals.
Community Design

City Architecture, a local urban planning and architecture firm, was
hired by OCNW to develop schematic designs for the park. The firm led
a discussion with the advisory committee and project partners in order
to collect their thoughts and ideas about the park. City Architecture
then held a similar process at a public meeting. From this input they
developed three design schemes. They presented the schemes to the project
partners and continued to develop one scheme based on their comments.
They then presented all three schemes to the advisory committee in addition
to the expanded scheme related to the project partner's comments. The
advisory committee was given the opportunity to offer comments and feedback.
In late October 2005 a public meeting was held to give the community the
same opportunity. The project team is in the process of finalizing the
chosen design scheme and begin design development, continue public meetings
and fundraising.
