It seems that by the time
you fully figure out how to operate your PC or cell phone,
it's outdated and in need of replacement. This widespread
rapid obsolescence has left us with a major problem. Often
this equipment contains hazardous materials and valuable metals
that make them unsuitable for landfill disposal. How do we
dispose of hundreds of thousands of pounds of outdated computer
and electronic equipment?
The City of Cleveland, in partnership
with the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, has developed
a program to recycle residential computer equipment.
- Cleveland residents are invited
to drop off their used computer equipment at the Waste Collection
Site located at 5600 Carnegie Ave. or 3727 Ridge Rd. during
either of the semi-annual collection drives.
Once the equipment is collected and sorted it
is sent to RET3
Job Corp. of Cleveland where it is "double
wiped" clean, refurbished and redistributed to local
schools and non-profit organizations. If the equipment is
not suitable for refurbishing, it is taken apart and many
of its components are recycled.
Last year the city sponsored computer recycling
drives yielded over 34 tons. That's 64,000 pounds of would-be
waste diverted from the waste stream and put to good use in
our communities.
