Do you have old motor oil or gasoline sitting in your garage? Or how about a dead car battery, old pesticides, or an outdated bucket of driveway sealer? All of these products have common everyday uses, but if stored or disposed of incorrectly they can become severely toxic to humans, wildlife, and the environment. In order to protect the health of our environment, our families, our neighbors, and our service employees, the City of Cleveland Division of Waste Collection has enacted a program to safely dispose of household hazardous waste.

The City, in conjunction with the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, holds two semi-annual collection events, in which Cleveland residents can drop off their hazardous waste free of charge at a designated Cleveland waste collection facility. Once the hazardous waste is collected, it is transferred to a county facility where it is picked up by a third-party, contracted, disposal company which later filters, cleans and recycles the waste. The waste that cannot be recycled is disposed of following strict environmental regulation guidelines. Acceptable Products:

  • Paint and related products (liquid and Aerosol): ONLY oil or solvent-based paint, sealers, primers, or coatings
  • Varnishes, polyurethane, shellacs
  • Paint thinner, mineral spirits, turpentine
  • Spray paint
    Pesticides:
  • Pesticides (bug and rodent killers)
  • Herbicides (weed killers)
  • Insecticides (bug killers)
  • Fungicides (mold killers)
  • Other Miscellaneous Items: Caustic household cleaners (oven cleaner, drain cleaner, muriatic acid, etc.)
  • Automotive products
  • Adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealer
  • Motor oil
  • Mercury
  • Kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid
  • Batteries
  • Fluorescent bulbs
*Latex Paint is not accepted during the household hazardous waste collection events. It can be disposed of with your normal curbside garbage. Simply remove the lid and allow the paint to dry up before placing on the curb. If you have a larger amount of latex paint, mix the paint with an absorbent material such as cat litter or sawdust and allow it to dry fully before placing it out for pick up.
